India, Kolkata: West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd. (WBPDCL) is assessing the possibility of replacing oil-filled transformers with gas-filled units.
The consideration follows a fire that took place at Kolkata Thermal Power Station (KTPS) early this week after an oil-filled transformer burst due to an electrical fault, leading to a raging fire that threatened to spread across the plant, reports The Times of India.
"Gas-based transformers are expensive. So it will take time to replace all the oil-based transformers with these dry ones. But we are trying to ensure that if a transformer is replaced, the new one that is installed is a gas-based one," said a WBPDCL official.
