According to vice-president of China Electrical Equipment Industrial Association (CCEIA), China is also moving towards high efficiency transformers, facing the same challenge of balancing performance with cost as that faced by the U.S. and the EU countries.

Unlike the U.S. and the EU, China does not have legislation on transformer efficiency, however, transformer manufacturers are encouraged to produce transformers that are more energy efficient, reports Power Systems Design.

“In China many transformers are still using thermal power and they pose detrimental impacts to the environment on many levels,” says Dr. Guo Zhenyan, vice-president of CCEIA.

Apart from efficiency standards, he also points to a growing customer demand for such transformers, suggesting that companies in China have become aware that higher performing transformers with lower consumption of energy mean lower operating costs in the long-term.
